My school sent me a letter stating that my social security # and other information was compromised resulting from a stolen computer. I have called on of the top 3 credit companies and issued an initial alert. What other things should i do to prevent myself from being vulnerable to identity theft?

Say for example.. someone else has been using your credit card for 2 weeks and incurred $600+ worth of theft. What will happen? Will your credit score go down? can you get the money back? can you catch the perpetrator?

A relative came and stayed at our home for a few days. They had access to our home when we were at work and so they could have easily gotten all of our information. Now I find that they have stolen from other relatives and committed identity theft in the past! Is there anything we can do to protect ourselves from accounts being opened or loans made in our name?

I would like to know how many people in 1,000 actually get their identity stolen and used. I suspect that some credit companies are trying to scare us.

bethizmom asked:
I know some credit card companies do care about identity theft but my big question is how come they don’t try to protect against it harder, i.e. to keep themselves from having to pay the businesses back for someone purchasing on another persons credit card that wasn’t suppose too. If a thief charges thousands of dollars on someones credit card they stole, credit card companies have to pay back the businesses and it just seems to me that if they don’t want to keep paying of the businesses for the thieves then why don’t they protect against identity theft harder? Do they have so much money that they just don’t know what to do with it?

I have two identity theft accounts. Someone use my social security number to apply for SBC and Direct TV. I never receive bills from them. When I found out about these accounts, they already shown as collection on my credit report. These have negative effect on my credit. I called up the collection agency for SBC and told them this is not my account. They are not willing to remove me. I have called up Federal Trade Commission and reported these. They couldn’t do anything about this. I have try to consult free legal aids, they didn’t make any reply!!! How can I remove these identity theft accounts?
